How to solve PARAJUMBLES for CAT 2016 ?

Para-jumbles are one of the most frequently asked questions in the Verbal Ability section of CAT Examination. Para-jumbles are a short and simple word to describe jumbled paragraphs.

This topic is also known by the name of “Sentence Rearrangement”.

As a fundamental introduction, we all know that these questions consist of a set of sentences, each labeled with a letter. The sentences have to be arranged logically to form a logical paragraph.

We are mentioning some of the best recommended approaches to solve Para-jumbles for CAT 2016.

  • USE OF THUMB RULE

The thumb rule says that General Information is always stated above specific information. Any idea that is universal is placed first and then followed by information that is more specific.

  • COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS

Coordinating conjunctions are put between words, clauses, phrases or sentences of equal rank. There are seven coordinating conjunctions namely; “And, but, for, nor, or, so, and yet”. To recollect each of the seven, you might need to learn one of these acronyms: FANBOYS, FONYBAS or YAFNOBS.

  • HIGHLIGHT THE CLUES IN EVERY SENTENCE

First, shortlist the opening sentence and then try looking for clues in every other given sentence. Jot down the connecting phrases like – MOREOVER, HOWEVER, NONETHELESS, BUT on a piece of paper. Adjectives will give you a lot of hint about the order of sentences. Also search for Pronouns like HE, SHE, IT,THEY, THEM for your advantage and articles like – THE, A, AND as these are what we want to highlight now to solve the jumbled sentences.

  • UNITE QUALIFIER AND QUALIFIED SENTENCES

Determine the Qualifier and Qualified sentences. A sentence that gives a hint about the next sentence is called as Qualifier sentence while the next sentence is known as the Qualified sentence. You have to join them together to get a logical paragraph.

  • ELIMINATION OF UNSUITABLE OPTIONS

You can eliminate some of the given options by using the Qualifier and Qualified sentences. For instance, if you are sure that Sentence C follows Sentence B then you can declare the options CBAD or ACDB as invalid.

Last but the most important trick is not to rush with the answers. Always be patient and mark the answer only when you have confidently evaluated all the given options.
